How to Transition from Commercial Shampoos to Natural Shampoo Bars

Shampoo bars are a great alternative to commercial shampoos as they are free of chemicals and therefore more natural. However, some people may find that their initial reactions to using a shampoo bar is not exactly a positive one. Although many people encounter no problems at all with shampoo bars, certain people using shampoo bars for the first time may find that their hair does in fact feel different, a feeling that can be categorized as weird or slightly “gummy”.

This feeling is due to the fact that when one is accustomed to using commercial shampoos and conditioners which contain several synthetic ingredients such as silicones that coat the hair to give the effect of being soft, they in fact leave a residue on your hair. These silicones are derived from polymers which are soft, plastic, gel-like substances that are hard to remove from your hair and scalp. The commercial shampoos contain a generous amount of them as well as loads of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), which are great surfactants and do a great job at stripping all the residue from your scalp, however this is done at the expense of stripping your hair of your natural (very necessary) natural oils. When you switch to an all-natural shampoo bar, you no longer have the harsh detergent-like chemicals to strip away the residue, which is a great in the long term for your general hair and scalp health. Our shampoo bars are very gentle, yet effective cleansers.

Your hair may need to transition from using commercial shampoos and being free of those chemicals. If you find that your hair is feeling slightly “gummy”, you may need to give the shampoo bars about a month (washing your hair at least once a week) to rid your hair of the old residue from your commercial shampoo and conditioners. Natural shampoo bars are great as they clean and condition your hair and scalp without stripping it of its natural sebum.

Since shampoo bars do not strip hair in the same way as detergent based shampoos, you may notice your wet hair feeling different after washing than you may be accustomed. This is perfectly normal, you’ll love how your hair feels after it dries.

How to use shampoo bars:
When using the bars, one thing that is very important is to lather your hair very well! Our shampoo bars are superfatted and therefore contain extra oils and butters to nourish your hair. If you rub the shampoo bars on your hair and scalp, you are coating your hair with superfatted soap. If you do not lather up really well, you will have areas that remain coated with the soap oils, which may make it look “gummy”. When using shampoo bars for the first time and if you experience a gummy texture, regardless of a good lather, we suggest that you do an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse after shampooing, with 1 part ACV and 3 parts of water.
